Luke 5:16 - But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Welcome to our second day of fasting and prayer and our second daily devotional. At the beginning of each year we always spend 21 days fasting and praying together as a church. Fasting is powerful. I wrote about it yesterday. But it becomes super powerful when you attach personal prayer to it. And when it comes to prayer, it’s not necessarily about quantity. It is about quality. Spending quality time with God every day.
If you’re used to having people around and music or the TV always on, then spending time with God might feel a little “lonely” or maybe even too quiet at first. But when you get in the habit, it becomes the most important thing you do, the most essential and vital ingredient to your day.
One day Jesus went to the house of some of His friends, Martha and Mary. Martha was busy running around cleaning and getting things ready. Mary was just sitting listening to Jesus. Martha got a little upset that Mary wasn’t helping and she complained to Jesus. Listen to what Jesus said in Luke 10:41-42 - “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed - or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Every time I read this story I feel like I probably would have been Martha. But Jesus said Mary was doing the one thing that was needed and the time she was spending with Him would never be taken away from her. Wow.
Make a decision to spend a few minutes with God every day. Bring him your worries and concerns and desires. Pray through your day ahead. You will experience God’s presence and His grace will go with you throughout the day.
Prayer Starter: Lord, give me the desire and discipline to spend time with you every day.
Today’s Prayer Focus: Pray for our church, The Life Church, for a strong and fruitful start to 2021.
